Two-time Sundance and IDFA award-winning director Leonard Retel Helmrich returns to his native Holland with a film about one of the country’s strongest national passions: raw herring. Raw Herring is a riveting look behind the scenes of a soon-to-be-extinct tradition, the men who live for herring and their strong women who hold the fort on shore.



Using his trademark Single Shot Cinema style that creates drama and movement with long, mobile takes, Leonard made Raw Herring with the same successful team behind Position Among the Stars: his sister/co-director of Raw Herring Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich (WGA award nominee for Best Documentary Screenplay 2011) and her son/editor Jasper Naaijkens (Cinema Eye Awards nominee for Best Editor 2011).



Raw Herring is a lyrical tribute to the two only ships left in the world to still use the century-old Dutch methods of catching, processing and salting herring on-board. This expensive method and fierce competition from Norway are endangering the ships’ future. Still, the captain and crew proudly cling to their traditional, finely-honed craft, which they are eager to hand over to their young sons, who join them on the herring catch during school holidays.:
